I’m Iris Varela, a clinical specialist trained in both the United States and the UK, with a master’s degree in social work. I am registered with Social Work England and am a trained CBT therapist (through King’s College) and supervisor (through University College London). I teach professionals at the Anna Freud National Centre for Children & Families at UCL, focusing on the intersection of neurodivergence and mental health, deliver autism assessments and I am a clinical supervisor at CAMHS. Additionally, I deliver supervision and teach school staff about the neurodivergent experience. For over 20 years, I have been passionate about working alongside neurodivergent individuals. As the evidence in our field has evolved, I have shifted away from the medical model and embraced the social model of disability. This means validating the experiences of neurodivergent people and working systemically to change the stigma surrounding neurodivergence, as well as advocating for the adaptations needed to achieve equal access to education, work and services. I am excited to prioritise and listen to the voices of neurodivergent people, allowing them to guide my practice and create a safer space for them. To make sure I deliver the best support, I receive supervision from an experienced, published, autistic professional, as well as attending reflective spaces delivered by the autistic community.I’m committed to providing supportive care, understanding your unique individual needs, and helping others understand how to best support you.

This ensures that l understand ‘your’ experience from ‘your perspective’. Nurturing, growth and compassion are present throughout my work because l believe they are fundamental for hope and future fulfilment. As a late diagnosed adult l understand the difficulties of being neurodivergent and trying to fit into a neurotypical world. I also understand that considering or receiving a diagnosis may be a lot to process, yet once this is processed it may offer a new perspective on how your life works for you. I have 2 teenage children who are neurodivergent and a partner who is as well. We all present very differently and this uniqueness of each and everyone of us is reflected in the individualised way l work.I also have 14 year’s experience as a Health Visitor in the NHS and understand both through work experiences and personal experience how the parenting journey and its challenges may sometimes be overwhelming. I am a Clinical Psychologist and have worked in the NHS in various roles for over 15 years. More recently, I have taken a break from clinical work to grow and nurture my young family. Prior to this, I worked with children and adolescents, their caregivers, families and the systems around them. I have also worked with adults experiencing a broad range of difficulties such as significant mental health challenges, neurodiversity, physical health conditions, and major life transitions. I love working with young people and the systems around them to help them move through difficult life experiences. I do so with compassion, creativity and curiosity and by developing a shared understanding of the problems the young person and family are facing. Together we look for stories that affirm the strengths and resilience of the young person or family while also drawing on various evidence based techniques that build up skills that might help guide them through adversity. I particularly love working with neurodivergent young people and adults, exploring together how they experience the world. I work predominantly from a trauma-informed perspective and a lot of my work with neurodivergent families focusses on the parent-child relationship. I draw on a broad range of models in my therapeutic work including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Compassion Focussed Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Psychodynamic psychotherapy, attachment-based therapies and more holistic approaches that look at how the mind and body interact and how to support the nervous system.

I am a British Psychological Society (BPS) chartered psychologist and Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered counselling psychologist. This is an assurance that I work within the ethical boundaries of my profession and that I am suitably qualified, and that I engage in regular CPD and clinical supervision to maintain my practice. I offer a range of therapies to meet the needs of each client. Sessions are individual, either face to face, in my consulting room which is in easy reach of the A1 / M18/ M1 on the North Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire borders and or online. I offer Initial psychological assessments and also specialist ADHD and eating disorders assessments. I can signpost to multi-disciplinary team professionals from my network as required. I am registered with many leading health insurance providers. I believe that each individual has the potential to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life. Everything that you have learned to do in your life so far to alleviate distress is what you needed to do to survive. Sometimes these strategies might have been helpful for a short time and became maladaptive/unhelpful over time. As humans, we can learn more helpful (adaptive) ways of coping. We will work together to create a safe, warm, accepting, and collaborative space to explore change. I adopt a sexuality and gender affirmative stance to my practice.
